Schools & Scouting

Schools and Scouting, Partners in Education is one of the short-term Scouting Programs offered to Elementary schools that is currently being run nationally. This innovative outdoor education program has been running for over fifteen years here in the Fraser Valley!

Schools and Scouting is designed to supplement and complement the Grades 4-7 curriculum topics, including social studies, science, physical education, and fine arts, as well as the associated goals as mandated by the BC Ministry of Education’s Personal Learning Outcomes (PLO’s). Over the years, the Scouts Canada Fraser Valley Council has partnered with many elementary schools in Langley, Surrey, Delta, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Anmore, Maple Ridge, New Westminster, Chilliwack, and Abbotsford, seeing over 450 students participating in our program last year alone!

The program offers up to six in-classroom sessions designed to support the school’s 5 chosen camp sessions (11 to choose from!) the 2 ½ day residential camp at Scouts Canada’s beautiful Camp McLean; a unique, 50-acre campground situated in the heart of the Campbell Valley in South Langley. All classroom and camp sessions contain elements of “Leave No Trace,” and principles of outdoor ethics. Specifically, the topics addressed in this program (as selected by the schools) are Team Building, Outdoor Cooking, Fire-building, Pioneering, Shelter Building, Map Reading and Orienteering, Hike Planning, Outdoor Safety, Singing, Skits and Cheers, Theatre Sports, Campfire, Archery, Environmental Awareness, Local Ecosystems, and Traditional Ecological Knowledge.

The Schools and Scouting content is derived from skills taught in the first-year Scout program. The in-class sessions are an introduction to a variety of these skills, and the camp sessions that follow provide the opportunity to participate hands-on in the activities discussed in the classroom. As outdoor education in many schools has been limited, the Schools and Scouting program fills a niche for teachers who are interested in the program but may not have the personal skills or the resources to provide this experience to their students on their own.

We can accommodate classes of between 15 - 75 students at a time per camp. The ratio of students to adults at camp is always six to one (teachers, other staff or parent volunteers at their discretion). The total cost per student is $170.00. This amount includes Scouts insurance and membership fees, meals, activities, venue, and staff throughout the entire camp experience! The cost per teacher and/or parent volunteer is $40/person (also includes meals). The principal is always invited to attend at no cost! All meals are included and prepared by our Kitchen Staff, except for the first lunch upon arrival which the participants may bring with them to camp. Students love that they get to decide what they will be eating at camp for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and of course Dessert, based on in-class voting during the classroom sessions!
