Annual WestSurDel Area Scouting Race Day

This past weekend (March 7, 2015), the 14th Annual Area Race Day for WestSurDel was again hosted by10th &17th Sur Del Scouting units. This annual event is traditionally held on the first Saturday in March and includes Beaver Buggy and Cub Car racing. Both host scouting units are sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, giving them access to a full-sized gym, which is an ideal setting for this type of event.

This year the standard 18-Wheeler Troop event was replaced by an event called Troop Speed 60, which involves the racing of CO2 Cartridge-powered vehicles. This event is often referred to as Blast Car Racing. In a split second the vehicles, guided only by fishing wire, are propelled across an 80-foot span of floor. The Scouts, who attended this new Speed 60 event, were so excited by the speed and performance of their carefully crafted vehicles, that they are all looking forward to competing next year! WestSurDel is looking forward to the growth of the new Speed 60 event as it was, and is, an Invitational to all Troops in the Fraser Valley Council.

In the Cub and Scout events, youth compete in both Design and Racing categories for Medals.

Deputy Area Commissioner Sherry Marceil who was been instrumental in both the inception and organization of this annual event, commented that it never ceases to amaze her at the good sportsmanship that is evident at all levels of competition among the scouting youth. She was quick to add that the success that comes year after year to this event, was due solely to the number of scouting volunteers, both adult and youth, who step up to help run the event, making it a memorable day for all who participate.
